The domestic terminal of Adnan Menderes Airport is the largest of its kind in Turkey with an area of about 290,000 sqm. It was constructed on the site of the former domestic terminal, which it is superior to especially in regard of waiting and travelling time as well as sustainability.
Lindner Steel and Glass took part in the project with the construction of four funnel structures, called "Elephant feet", with pipe elements. Pipe cross-section selection is an architectural decision, while at the same time providing the structural rigidity which limits horizontal displacements under seismic loads. Full penetration welding is used at nodes located at half length of the elephant feet. Site welding was kept at a minimum by pre-production of the several separate parts between each node level before installation. Following completion of welding works, intumescent fire proofing application was done on site. After completion of the glass installation, the top of the funnel elephant feet was closed with a membrane roof to provide protection against rain and sun. The top connection between membrane structure and main roof of the terminal, however, was left open to provide natural air ventilation inside the structure.
