The newly built library of the Martin-Luther-University is a substantial part of the centre for arts and social sciences. The interior of the building features two 'bookshelves' and a large atrium in between. Visitors may reach their desired level through a large stairwell located in the atrium. A glazed roof construction allows natural light to illuminate the areas of the building with the support of LED systems. The erection of the library required an investment capital of €16 mio and created 4,600 sqm of usable space, containing 800,000 volumes.
The library´s architecture is rather discreet, despite its lively elements. Clear structures are in interplay with warm accents emitted by wooden elements, creating a pleasant atmosphere for learning and reading. Lindner Objektdesign GmbH, being a specialist for timber constructions and joinery works, was contracted with the production and installation of wooden wall claddings for the atrium.
