To give customers the opportunity to calculate the environmental footprint of their building envelope, Lindner shares its know-how in Life Cycle Assessments: By modelling buildings in a software, the CO2 emissions of building envelopes can be calculated for the completion process as well as for the expected service life.

Life Cycle Assessments

Lindner are able to generate a Life Cycle Assessment for every product up the building or for the steel and glass facade. Calculating the Carbon footprint of building envelopes of future buildings presumes the projects parties involved work together in order to get the data required: This includes material being used to build the steel and glass façade as well as quantities. A model is then programmed in an LCA software to illustrate the manufacturing of the facade components. First, the completion of the building process and then, if the client agrees, scenarios for the expected service life of the building can be calculated – like the CO2 emissions per year.

In principle LCAs for every product needed to build up the building or steel and glass façade can be generated. Missing information in the Life Cycle Inventory is modelled in the software with statistical data. Thus, clients have the opportunity to learn more about the Carbon footprint of the building as soon as the architectural plans are made and the material is chosen. Moreover, they can test on more environmental friendly solutions for the building envelope in simulations and are enabled to identify materials with a longer service life or materials which can be disassembled more easily in order to be reused for further projects.

Reducing CO2 Emissions

Lindner already began to calculate LCAs many years ago, not only for the environmental product declarations demanded by the market (EPDs acc. to 15804 and ISO 14025) but also for the production sites in order to be able to identify the CO2 possible savings. After implementing CO2 saving measures within the company and its production facilities, the next logical step was to share the know-how in Life Cycle Assessments with clients giving them the opportunity to calculate the environmental footprint of their buildings. That way Lindner and their clients are not only prepared for the recent climate change law but can have a real impact on reducing CO2.
